Not sure how to start off your sex ed unit? The comprehensive sexual health material given to you by your district is dull and invites little to no engagement from the students? Don't worry, I've got you!! This 2-day intro to sex ed resource is the perfect way to spark your teens' interest, get them talking, and learning about sex ed around the world—all done in a way that skips the awkward silences.
Here's how!
The lesson starts with setting ground rules for the unit and moving into a digital word wall, where students define sexual health and the main topics within it. Then, they explore why sex ed matters through LifeFluent's own YouTube video (watch it HERE), and move into an activity that shows students what sex ed is like around the world. They must find the correlation between teen pregnancy rates, STIs, and the sex ed curriculum taught in those regions... and let me tell you, some of it is shocking. Like how only 26 U.S. states require their sex ed to be medically accurate, or how some regions in the world still have practices that punish women for having periods.. But it also highlights positive practices, like how the Dutch and the Taiwanese begin sex ed in kindergarten and approach it in a holistic and positive way.
All of this is covered in these 2 days of learning! Plus, there’s an at-home assignment where students do their own research and activism by writing to their local government about the policies around their sex ed.
