You can't talk about peer pressure and making healthy decisions without first discussing what it truly means to belong somewhere versus changing ourselves to fit in or appear "cool." This 2-day lesson is a great way to start the year strong by exploring tribalism and the importance of community and belonging. It also examines how these ideas can create "us vs. them" mentalities—something we want to avoid in the classroom. How can we create a classroom where everyone feels they belong? That’s the goal of this lesson.
The lesson begins by breaking down what it means to authentically be yourself and find people you truly belong with. It then transitions into a hexagonal thinking activity (not sure what that is? Watch this great video!).
After these discussions, students will starting discovering more about their classmates and creating a lasting reminder of this message. They will create an identity collage, which will be displayed on the wall under a message that reads, "We Belong Here." It’s a meaningful project that can stay up all year long.
