This Alcohol in the Media lesson (Google Slides) + project is the perfect way to have middle and high school students analyze, discuss, and present on the real risks of alcohol and substance abuse—often overlooked in the media.
I love this for my health class because we keep it real by talking about FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) and how social media and media, in general, make it seem like everyone is having a great time binge drinking and partying. But how much of that is actually true?
In this 25-slide google slide lesson, your students will first have a fun quick-fire challenge, followed by Instagram ads, commercials, and magazine ads portraying alcohol in a positive light. They will then look through the marketing to see a darker side and analyse the mistruths. (They will have a worksheet/notes sheet to follow along) Lastly, they will see examples of anti-alcohol ads and take part in making their own. RUBRIC and PROJECT INSTRUCTIONS INCLUDED!
I made this lesson relevant by referencing popular TV shows, Instagram influencers, and the kind of media they see on an everyday basis.
